Yuan S., Computer Science, United States

Originally from China and now based in the United States, Yuan S. is earning her bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at University of the People. She has built a personal and professional outlook shaped by responsibility, education, and perseverance.

Throughout Yuan’s education and career, adapting to new environments and navigating important career decisions have presented challenges, but these experiences have also strengthened her resilience, independence, and problem-solving skills.

Growing up in a family that valued education and responsibility, Yuan developed an appreciation for lifelong learning. Rather than viewing education as something that ends with a degree, she sees it as an ongoing process that can support both personal development and professional growth.

“I chose UoPeople because of its mission to provide accessible, affordable, and high-quality education,” Yuan says. “As someone who values lifelong learning, I was drawn to the flexible online structure, which allows me to balance my studies with professional and personal responsibilities.”

For Yuan, flexibility is particularly valuable. Being able to organize coursework around existing responsibilities makes it possible to continue learning without putting professional or personal commitments on hold.

She also appreciates UoPeople’s focus on practical, career-relevant knowledge and its diverse global learning community. Studying alongside people from different cultural and professional backgrounds has provided opportunities to encounter new perspectives and broaden Yuan’s understanding of different experiences and approaches.

“One of my favorite aspects of the UoPeople learning experience is the active participation encouraged through discussion forums and peer assessments. These activities provide opportunities to engage with classmates while developing critical thinking and communication skills. Learning alongside students from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds has broadened my perspective. Online learning requires a high level of self-discipline and time management, but these challenges have also helped me become more independent and organized as a learner,” Yuan explains.

She sees her education at UoPeople as an important investment in her future. Beyond strengthening her academic foundation, she believes the experience is helping her develop practical skills that can be applied professionally.

Yuan hopes the degree will enhance her professional credibility, deepen her knowledge in key areas, and prepare her for more advanced career opportunities and continued learning. The global nature of the UoPeople community is also helping strengthen communication and problem-solving skills—qualities that are valuable across professional fields.

For her, education is ultimately about continuing to grow and finding meaningful ways to contribute through work.

As Yuan continues the academic journey at UoPeople, the goal remains clear: to combine lifelong learning with professional development and use each new opportunity to build a stronger foundation for the future.
