Twenty-five-year-old Ladji O. is currently earning his bachelor’s degree in computer science at University of the People. Originally from Côte d’Ivoire in West Africa, Ladji grew up in a modest family where education was not taken for granted—it was both a privilege and a responsibility.

“My parents did not always have much,” he shares, “but they always emphasized discipline, faith, and hard work.”

Ladji’s early education took place in local public schools, where resources were often scarce. Access to advanced laboratories was limited, and reliable internet was not always available. Even basic learning materials were sometimes difficult to obtain. Yet instead of discouraging him, these challenges shaped his mindset.

“I learned very early that if I wanted something, I had to work for it consistently.”

This foundation of perseverance would become essential as Ladji pursued higher education. Financial limitations made attending a traditional university difficult, requiring careful planning, sacrifice, and unwavering focus.

“There were times of doubt and emotional pressure,” he recalls. “But my faith helped me stay patient, resilient, and focused on my long-term goals.”

Rather than seeing obstacles as barriers, Ladji chose to view them as opportunities for growth.

His turning point came unexpectedly—while scrolling through social media. Searching for an affordable, accredited university, Ladji discovered UoPeople.

“This option stood out. It felt like an opportunity designed for students like me—students with ambition but limited financial means.”

Drawn by the university’s accessibility, flexibility, and scholarship opportunities, Ladji decided to enroll at UoPeople. He quickly adapted to the structure and found the academic experience both clear and supportive.

“The platform is well organized, and I felt guided from the start. I love the flexibility of studying online and the diversity of the student community. Interacting with peers from around the world has expanded my perspective and reinforced a powerful realization: while backgrounds may differ, ambitions often align. We may live in different countries, but we share similar dreams.”

The peer-review system, a cornerstone of the learning model, has also played a significant role in his development.

“It has helped me grow—not only academically, but personally. I’ve learned how to give constructive feedback and accept criticism with maturity.”

Today, Ladji is focused on building a future in technology, with a particular interest in cybersecurity. His ambitions extend far beyond personal success. He hopes to contribute to technological development in Africa and inspire young people in his community.

“I want them to know that our background does not define our limits.”

Balancing studies with daily life is not always easy. It requires discipline, planning, and sacrifice. There are evenings when exhaustion sets in. He also faces the realities of studying online in a developing environment—unstable internet connections, frequent power outages, and moments of uncertainty. But despite these challenges, Ladji remains committed.

“I still choose to log in and complete my work because I remember why I started.”

Outside of his studies, Ladji enjoys reading personal development books, playing football on weekends, and exploring new ideas that contribute to his growth.

For him, education is more than earning a degree; it is a pathway to possibility.

As he continues his journey, Ladji remains grounded in purpose and driven by impact. His story is not just about overcoming challenges—it’s about redefining them.

“If my story can encourage even one student not to give up,” he says, “then sharing it will truly be worthwhile.”

Ladji is proving that determination, discipline, and faith can transform even the most limited circumstances into powerful opportunities.
