About University Of Ilorin

The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) is a federal government-owned public research university located in the ancient city of Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. Established by a decree of the Federal Military Government in August 1975, the university’s main campus spans approximately 5,000 hectares, making it the largest university in Nigeria by land area and one of the largest in Africa. UNILORIN comprises 15 faculties spanning the arts, sciences, agriculture, engineering, law, and health sciences, with a student population of roughly 50,000.

UNILORIN is widely known for its academic stability, having maintained an uninterrupted academic calendar for decades under its “Better By Far” motto. It was the first Nigerian university to adopt Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for admissions and examinations, a model later scaled nationwide by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and has received JAMB’s National Tertiary Admissions Performance Merit Award. The College of Health Sciences works closely with the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH).

EduRank ranks UNILORIN 8th among Nigerian universities (2025), and the university appears in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026 band of 1201-1500. Notable alumni include Nollywood actor Nkem Owoh and Professor Is-haq Oloyede, the current JAMB Registrar and a former UNILORIN Vice-Chancellor.
