Bowen University
About Bowen University
Bowen University is a private Baptist Christian university in Iwo, Osun State, Nigeria, founded on 17 July 2001 by the Nigerian Baptist Convention on the 1,300-acre former campus of the Baptist College. It is described as the first Baptist university in Africa, with roots tracing to a missionary school established by Rev. Thomas Jefferson Bowen in 1854. Academic activity began in November 2002 with 506 students across three faculties; the university now offers over 40 undergraduate and 30 postgraduate programs across seven colleges, with a student population of roughly 5,000.
Bowen added Medicine (MBBS) in 2009, and Law and Humanities in 2011. All undergraduates are required to live on campus. In 2025, at its 20th convocation, seven Bowen scholars were recognized in Stanford University’s list of the world’s top 2% of scientists by citation impact.
Notable alumni include Joshua Mike-Bamiloye, gospel musician and member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, and Nollywood comedian and actress KieKie.
