“My academic journey took a transformative turn when I discovered UoPeople,” Says Nothando M., a Business Student
Nothando M., Business Administration, Swaziland
Nothando M. grew up in the rural community of Hluti, in the Shiselweni Region of Eswatini, where she was raised by her grandparents. In a household of ten children, she was the first to graduate—a milestone that carried the hopes and dreams of her entire family.
“I was raised with discipline and resilience,” she recalls. “My grandparents taught me that education is the path to a better life. Growing up in a close-knit environment, I learned early on the value of perseverance, responsibility, and hard work, qualities that continue to shape my journey even today.”
Nothando pursued her passion for technology by earning a diploma in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the Swaziland College of Technology in 2018. Shortly after graduating, she began working at the Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) as a standby radio operator.
She describes her workplace with pride, calling it “the best company in the country,” where she has been able to grow professionally while balancing her responsibilities at home. Her role has strengthened her technical skills and given her valuable experience in a dynamic and demanding environment.
Nothando’s academic journey took a transformative turn when a colleague introduced her to University of the People. The idea of accessing tuition-free, accredited higher education opened new possibilities for her future.
Motivated by this discovery, she enrolled in an Associate of Science in Business Administration, aiming to complement her technical background with business knowledge. She also plans to continue her studies and complete a bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, combining both fields to expand her career opportunities.
As the breadwinner of her extended family, Nothando faces significant financial and personal responsibilities. Managing household expenses, rent, work, and education is not easy—but she approaches every challenge with determination. She manages her studies by multitasking and staying organized.
Her ability to balance work, studies, and family has become one of her greatest strengths.
Family plays a central role in Nothando’s journey. Her sons inspire her every day to keep striving for a better future.
“My commitment to education has also influenced others around me. I encouraged my husband to enroll at UoPeople, where he is now pursuing a degree in Business Administration. Education is something we share as a family now,” she says with pride.
Nothando’s ambitions are clear and forward-looking. She plans to advance into a managerial role in distribution or operations at her current company.
“I want to combine my technical background with leadership skills. Beyond career growth, I hope to build financial stability and create opportunities not only for my family but also for my wider community,” she explains.
Outside of her professional and academic commitments, Nothando enjoys learning new skills, often exploring the internet for inspiration—especially when it comes to cooking.
“I enjoy learning new things,” she shares. “Whether it’s recipes or practical skills, I believe growth never stops.”
Nothando’s story is one of resilience, gratitude, and vision. From her rural beginnings to pursuing higher education through global online platforms, she continues to push boundaries and redefine what is possible.
“I was the first to graduate in my family, but I hope I won’t be the last,” she says.
Her journey is not just a personal achievement; it is a powerful reminder of how education can transform lives, uplift families, and inspire future generations.
UoPeople takes great pride in learners like Nothando, whose journey reflects its core values. We wish her all the best for everything she wants to accomplish in her life.
