Heshani K., Computer Science, Sri Lanka

Based in Sri Lanka, Heshani K. is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at University of the People. For her, education represents more than just academic progress.

“Education didn’t just change my life—it became my power, my voice, and my way of redesigning my future on my own terms. For me, it represents empowerment, independence, and possibility. It gives me the ability to shape my life and contribute meaningfully to the world,” she shares.

Heshani grew up in a modest family where education was deeply valued. Even though resources were limited, her curiosity about science, psychology, and technology grew early. “Those early challenges taught me resilience and independence. They showed me that education can transform your future regardless of where you start.”

While searching for affordable international educational opportunities, Heshani came across the UoPeople. The university’s mission of making higher education accessible immediately resonated with her. “UoPeople opened a door that once felt out of reach to me. It allows students like me to pursue a global degree despite financial or geographic barriers. UoPeople’s flexible structure makes it possible for me to balance studies with other responsibilities,” she explains.

Looking ahead, Heshani hopes to build a career in cybersecurity, particularly in Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC). “I want to help build digital systems that not only protect data but also understand human behavior and ethical responsibility.”

Outside of academics, Heshani finds balance through creativity and nature. She is passionate about painting and maintains a small personal gallery of her artwork. She also had the opportunity to learn under renowned Sri Lankan artist Jayasiri Semage, whose mentorship shaped her appreciation for art.

She enjoys coding, app development, and solving cybersecurity Capture-the-Flag (CTF) challenges. Gardening, especially caring for water lilies and lotus plants, helps her recharge. “Art, nature, and technology all play a role in my life. They remind me that learning and creativity can grow together.”

Today, Heshani balances multiple academic goals and personal responsibilities with determination. For her, education is not simply about earning a degree—it is about creating meaningful impact. Through the opportunities offered by the University of the People, she continues to rewrite her story, proving that with determination and access to education, new futures are possible. We are proud of her dedication and achievements and wish her continued success in the journey ahead.
