For more than 15 years, Helen C., an M.Ed. student at UoPeople, has dedicated her career to education. A Portuguese language teacher from Brazil, she has spent her professional life helping students learn and grow while continuously seeking opportunities to expand her own knowledge and skills.
From an early age, Helen faced significant academic and personal challenges. Yet those experiences only strengthened her commitment to learning and personal development.
“I have always maintained a strong commitment to education and intellectual growth,” she says.
One of Helen’s greatest challenges has been mastering English. Determined to broaden her opportunities and develop as an educator, she dedicated herself to learning the language and improving her communication skills.
Her hard work paid off when she earned a full scholarship to study Academic English and the Educator Preparation Institute (EPI) at Miami Dade College. The experience proved transformative, helping her gain new perspectives on teaching and opening doors to professional growth.
“It transformed my teaching perspective and created new opportunities for my career,” she says.
Today, Helen works as a paraprofessional in special education while pursuing her goal of becoming a certified Exceptional Student Education (ESE) teacher. She is passionate about supporting students with special needs and believes that every learner deserves access to a high-quality, inclusive education.
Her desire to continue growing as an educator led her to University of the People.
Helen was drawn to the university’s mission of making higher education accessible to people regardless of their financial circumstances. She believes that education should be a right, not a privilege, and found a strong connection with UoPeople’s commitment to opening doors for learners around the world.
“I chose UoPeople because it provides a unique opportunity for talented individuals with limited financial resources to access high-quality higher education,” she explains.
For Helen, the university’s flexible online model has been especially valuable. It allows her to continue working, pursuing professional certifications, and managing personal responsibilities while advancing her education.
She also appreciates the welcoming and inclusive learning environment that UoPeople offers.
“My favorite thing about studying at UoPeople is the opportunity to learn in a welcoming, flexible, and inclusive environment,” she says.
Although she is still at the beginning of her academic journey with the university, Helen is excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. She sees her studies as an important step toward becoming an even more effective educator and advocate for students with special needs.
Looking ahead, Helen believes her degree will provide her with valuable knowledge, teaching strategies, and pedagogical tools that will strengthen her ability to support diverse learners.
“I believe this degree will help me make a meaningful impact in my classroom and improve the quality of education I provide,” she says.
Beyond the classroom, she hopes her education will open new professional opportunities while helping her continue growing as a lifelong learner.
“Education has transformed my life,” Helen says. “I want to continue learning, expanding my understanding of inclusive practices, and helping students reach their full potential.”
Helen’s story reflects the power of perseverance, lifelong learning, and a passion for making education accessible to all.
As Helen continues her journey as an educator and advocate for students with special needs, we look forward to seeing the positive impact she will make in classrooms and communities alike.
