About Usmanu Danfodiyo University
Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), formerly the University of Sokoto, is a federal university in Sokoto, north-western Nigeria, and one of the initial universities established by the Federal Government in September 1975. It is named after Usman dan Fodio, the 19th-century scholar who founded the Sokoto Caliphate. UDUS operates across City and Main campuses and comprises 15 faculties, offering four, five, and six-year degree programs.
The university runs a standard medical program alongside the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH), and hosts research centres including the Centre for Islamic Studies (est. 1982) and the Sokoto Energy Research Centre (est. 1982). In 2019, UDUS student Amina Yahaya became the first female president of a Student Union Government in a northern Nigerian tertiary institution.
Notable alumni include Aminu Tambuwal, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and former Governor of Sokoto State, and Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
