About Niger Delta University
Niger Delta University (NDU) is a state-owned university funded by the Bayelsa State Government, established in 2000 by Chief D.S.P. Alamieyeseigha, then Governor of Bayelsa State. NDU’s campuses include the Amassoma (“Gloryland”) main campus on Wilberforce Island, an island of historic significance about 30 kilometres from the state capital Yenagoa; a College of Health Sciences campus also on Wilberforce Island; and a satellite campus in Yenagoa housing the Faculty of Law. Academic activities began in the 2001/2002 session with 1,039 students across seven faculties, growing to 12 faculties, 44 programmes (36 fully NUC-accredited), and a student population exceeding 20,000.
NDU’s motto is “Creativity, Excellence and Service,” reflecting the riverine, petroleum-rich character of Bayelsa State. Its Chancellor is the Shehu of Borno, Dr. Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi.
