Computer Science Student Marzia H. Envisions a Future Where Education Knows No Boundaries

Afghan woman computer science student at UoPeople

Marzia H., Computer Science, Afghanistan

Marzia H. from Afghanistan is currently earning a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at University of the People. Raised in a quiet, traditional village, her childhood was simple yet filled with challenges, particularly for girls like her who dared to dream of a brighter future.

Educational opportunities for Marzia have always been scarce, but she chooses not to give up. She worked diligently and finished high school, holding onto the hope of someday being able to earn a college education.

“After finishing high school, I moved to Kabul to pursue a college education. It was not easy — living away from family, managing expenses, and adjusting to a new city, but I was determined. Sadly, my journey was cut short when the political situation changed, and women were no longer allowed to attend universities. I had to return to my village, where there are no opportunities for girls. There are no universities, no academic centers, and even if they did exist, girls wouldn’t be permitted to join them. Being confined to household chores while watching my dreams fade away has been the most painful part for me. In a place where women are silenced and their ambitions are restricted, finding hope and opportunities is a daily struggle,” she shares.

In her search for a way to continue her education, Marzia began exploring educational options online. She came across various online universities, but most of them required tuition fees beyond her reach.

“University of the People felt to me like a light shining through all the darkness. I applied immediately and was fortunate to be accepted into the bachelor’s program. UoPeople is my only hope, and I’m forever grateful for having found it. I would strongly recommend UoPeople to others — especially women in difficult situations like mine.”

Marzia loves the flexibility of studying at her own pace and the global peer community she has befriended at UoPeople. “I can study in the quiet moments between household responsibilities. My instructors, advisors, and peers are so supportive. It makes me feel connected to the world again — like I belong to something meaningful.”

With the challenges of household responsibilities, limited electricity and internet access, life often gets difficult for her, but Marzia likes to stay cheerful. Outside of her studies, she enjoys sketching, cooking, and diving into new coding projects. These small joys keep her inspired and motivated.

Looking ahead, she aspires to become a skilled software developer and contribute to the global tech community. She hopes to mentor young women in Afghanistan who dream of learning but have no access to education. Her bigger dream is to help create a future where education and technology are not limited by geography or gender. “UoPeople sparked this hope in me, and I want to pass the light on.”

Marzia’s life is an inspiration for millions of learners around the world who aspire to earn a college degree but feel limited by their circumstances. As a university, we feel honored to be able to support her dreams and wish her all the best for her future.
