“UoPeople Gave Me an Affordable, Online Path to Earn My Degree While Working,” Says Kimberly O., Computer Science Student
Kimberly O., Computer Science, United States
At 37, Kimberly O. is proving it’s never too late to pivot toward a more fulfilling future. Raised and based in San Diego County, Southern California, she is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at University of the People — a decision shaped by resilience and a determination to create change.
Growing up, Kimberly spent afternoons at her parents’ small business or with her grandmother, learning responsibility early by answering phones and filing paperwork. “I was very inquisitive as a child and loved reading,” she shares — a curiosity that continues to guide her today.
An introvert, Kimberly intentionally pushed herself beyond her comfort zone. In middle and high school, she joined Zoo Corps at the San Diego Zoo, where she volunteered and taught families about animals and environmental topics. “I try to embrace a challenge, even if it is scary, if I think I will grow from it,” she says. The experience strengthened her confidence and public speaking skills.
In recent years, she has faced significant physical challenges, including injuries that required surgery and limited her mobility. “It affected me physically and emotionally,” she explains. Still, she remains focused on recovery, self-advocacy, and steady progress.
Although she had already earned a bachelor’s degree, two master’s degrees, and multiple teaching credentials, Kimberly felt stuck in a high-stress career. “I knew I needed a change,” she shares.
While watching the Summer Olympics, she saw an advertisement featuring UoPeople. The university stayed in her mind. Later, when she began seriously exploring a transition into computer science, she started researching UoPeople.
“Job postings required either experience or a bachelor’s in computer science. UoPeople offered an affordable, fully online option that allowed me to keep working while studying. It was the opportunity I needed.”
Kimberly was able to transfer a significant number of credits from her previous degrees, as well as courses completed through Sophia Learning. Now in her final two courses, she appreciates the flexible, eight-week format. “I like that it is all online. It’s affordable, and I learn more by focusing on fewer classes at a time.”
Balancing health recovery, work, and study hasn’t been easy, but with strong family support, she is preparing for graduation and a new career in technology. Outside of school, she enjoys reading, gaming, and playing in her local Pokémon League.
Kimberly’s journey reflects reinvention, courage, and the willingness to start again — no matter the stage of life. As a university, we are proud to support Kimberly on her remarkable journey and celebrate her determination and growth. We wish her every success as she continues to pursue her goals and shape the future she envisions.
