“Studying with a Global Community Has Expanded My Perspective on Health,” Says Hauwa U.
Hauwa U., Health Science, Nigeria
Based in Nigeria, Hauwa U. is pursuing her Bachelor’s degree in Health Science at University of the People, guided by a passion for improving lives through healthcare and community impact. Her journey reflects determination, independence, and a deep commitment to serving others.
Hauwa grew up in a close-knit and religious family where education was highly valued. “From an early age, I was encouraged to learn, explore, and build a strong academic foundation. Attending local schools, I developed a particular interest in science. It eventually shaped my aspiration to work in public health and contribute to population well-being,” she shares.
One of the biggest challenges Hauwa faced was navigating her educational path without access to mentors or guidance early on. She often had to make important decisions independently—choosing courses, managing her studies, and exploring career opportunities on her own.
“It wasn’t easy having to figure everything out by myself,” she says. “But it taught me independence, self-reliance, and the importance of seeking knowledge wherever I can find it.”
While exploring online learning opportunities, she discovered UoPeople. The university’s mission to provide tuition-free, accredited education immediately resonated with her.
“I was inspired by the idea of a university that empowers students from all over the world,” Hauwa explains. “I truly value the flexibility that UoPeople offers. Studying online allows me to balance academic work alongside personal responsibilities, my studies at a traditional university, and my involvement in community advocacy.”
She also appreciates the collaborative learning environment, where she engages with students from diverse backgrounds across the globe. These interactions have broadened her perspective and deepened her understanding of global health challenges.
“Learning with people from different countries has expanded how I see health issues and solutions,” she shares.
Outside of her studies, Hauwa is actively involved in community programs, particularly those focused on women’s development and the health of women and children. She is passionate about advocacy and enjoys reading, volunteering, and spending time with family and friends.
Looking ahead, Hauwa plans to pursue a Master’s degree in Public Health after completing her undergraduate studies. Her long-term goal is to work on health initiatives in Nigeria, focusing on maternal and child health, disease prevention, and improving overall population well-being.
“I want to use my knowledge to contribute to healthier and stronger communities,” she says.
Balancing multiple responsibilities has required discipline, strong time management, and a supportive network. Yet, for Hauwa, each challenge is part of a larger purpose.
Her journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and self-belief—showing that with determination and access to education, it is possible to create meaningful change, both for oneself and for others.
