Chan Nyein A., Health Science, Myanmar

Driven by a lifelong commitment to helping others, Chan Nyein A. is pursuing his Bachelor of Science in Health Science at University of the People. Growing up in a small town in Myanmar with limited access to education and healthcare, he learned the importance of perseverance at an early age. “My early education was challenging because of limited local resources,” he recalls, “but it taught me resilience and adaptability—two values that continue to guide me today.”

Chan’s educational journey unfolded amid Myanmar’s political crisis. The crisis severely disrupted universities, public services, and daily life. “After the Covid-19 crisis and the coup, continuing higher education traditionally became almost impossible,” he explains. Financial constraints added another layer of difficulty, but he remained determined. “I refused to give up on my dream of advancing my health science knowledge and contributing to community well-being.”

The turning point came when he learned about UoPeople from social media and a university lecturer. “When I heard that UoPeople offers tuition-free, flexible, and accredited programs, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to continue my academic journey despite the crisis in my country. The university’s mission deeply resonated with me. I strongly believe that education should be accessible for everyone, no matter their circumstances.”

For Chan, UoPeople has been life-changing. The flexibility of online learning allows him to work with local humanitarian organizations while studying. “I’ve learned valuable skills in public health, research, and community health promotion, and I apply them directly in real-life settings,” he shares.

He especially values the global connections built through classroom discussions. “The discussion forums feel like a global classroom. We exchange ideas and experiences across cultures, all working toward a shared purpose—improving health and lives.”

Chan plans to pursue a master’s degree in public health after completing his degree. His goal is to specialize in sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). “I want to contribute to improving health equity for women and adolescents in humanitarian and conflict-affected settings. Ultimately, I hope to lead community-based programs that empower people through education and awareness.”

Outside of academics and humanitarian work, Chan enjoys spending time in nature, reading health-related articles, and mentoring youth volunteers. “Supporting others and promoting mental well-being is very important for humanitarian workers like us,” he reflects.

Balancing studies, work, and community responsibilities is challenging, but manageable. “I plan carefully and stay motivated. The flexibility of UoPeople allows me to continue my education while working in the field. Encouragement from professors and classmates keeps me focused even in difficult times.”

For Chan, UoPeople is more than a university—it is a lifeline. “UoPeople has given me more than just a degree—it has given me hope and a pathway to contribute meaningfully to society. I love encouraging others to take the leap. No matter where you are, UoPeople proves that quality education is possible if you have determination and the will to learn.”

Chan’s journey and the values he embodies are truly inspiring. As a university, we are proud of him and honored to support his goals.
