How Can You Study Without Needing Student Loans?

[Pasadena, CA. December 1, 2020] – According to FinAid.org, college tuition rises 8% on average every year, and this growth has risen faster than inflation. With costs upwards of $50,000 per year, many students have no other choice but to take out loans with high interest rates.  Or worse, they don’t even consider the possibility of getting a college education.  Thankfully, there are some schools that offer free tuition to their students.

The Average Cost of College Tuition

In the United States, the average cost of college tuition is $9,970 a year for a public in-state college, $25,620 a year for a public out-of-state college, and $34,740 a year for a private college, according to Value Penguin.  The cost of tuition in the United States can set families back more than $100,000, and that’s just for one child.

Why We Need Tuition-Free College

Some people may feel that if you want to earn your education, no one is forcing you to go. Therefore, it is your responsibility to pay for it. However, we know for a fact that a college education can break the cycle of poverty in many families. With a degree, a student can seek a stable job with higher pay and support their family, thus breaking the cycle. But if the cost of getting a higher education is inaccessible to most families, then only those who are able to afford it will go, thereby increasing the inequality gap.

What Do We Mean by Tuition-Free?

So, what does tuition-free actually mean? In general, it means that the cost of tuition is waived by the school. There may still be some fees, but the overall cost becomes extremely low. However, there are different variations of this depending on the context of the situation. According to Edvisors and College Consensus, there are several schools that are tuition-free or are free under certain circumstances.

What Is the University of The People?

Unfortunately, not everyone has the ability to attend an in-person school, even if it is free. This is why online school and distance learning have become great options for people who have other priorities to manage, but still want to get their education. The thing is, online schools can still be quite expensive.

But then there’s University of the People, which recognizes all the barriers that prevent people from going to school, bettering their future, and breaking the cycle of poverty in their families. University of the People is the first accredited institution of higher education that’s tuition-free and entirely online. Now everyone can get a degree!
