Bethel Plans to Use Her Health Science Degree to Change Lives
Bethel K., Health Science, Egypt
Born in Eritrea, a small country in East Africa, Bethel K. describes herself as an introvert whose early years were filled with a lot of quiet time.
“As a child, I barely socialized out of my circle of close friends and family, and that influenced deeply my choices in life,” she says. “The adventure of exploring hobbies and passions took plenty of my time which provided me with the best opportunity to have a clear idea of my ambition.”
Bethel comes from a tropical place, full of beauty where sunflowers bloom in winter, and people live closely aligned with nature. Often, she would begin work as early as the birds started chirping in the morning.
Bethel and her family, left Eritrea at the age of fourteen, seeking refuge in Egypt. She recalls that time as particularly challenging but, over the years, she has come to think of Egypt as her second home.
It was always her plan to pursue higher education, but accessing educational opportunities in Egypt, especially as a refugee, was nearly impossible. So, she began researching online universities and eventually found University of the People, where she has begun earning her Health Science degree.
Bethel says that being part of UoPeople has changed her life and put her dream career within reach.
The real question is, what is her dream career? “I’ve always been passionate about chemistry as a field of study, which motivated me to study drug synthesis. I chose to earn my bachelor’s in health science at UoPeople because I want to help make improvements to medicine after I graduate. I look forward to devoting myself to finding cures for diseases and helping to change lives for the better,” she shares.
Bethel manages her full-time degree at UoPeople along with her full-time career as a psychosocial case worker in a local community-based organization. She enjoys the medical and psychological aspects of her career and feels they go well together with her current studies in health science.
How does Bethel do it all? Well, balancing classes with a full-time job is a challenge, but the flexibility of the online courses fit seamlessly into Bethel’s daily work schedule. She enjoys challenging herself every day and growing at a consistent pace.
“The ones who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do,” she quotes Steve Jobs, underlining her mantra in life. Bethel is a passionate dreamer and an industrious doer. We cannot wait to see her bloom in the field of health science and beyond.
