Professional Communication – COM 2001

This course introduces students to the principles and practices of professional communication. Students will learn how to communicate effectively in a variety of professional settings, including written communication, oral communication, and interpersonal communication. They will also learn about the ethical dimensions of professional communication.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes:

By the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. Identify the key elements of effective professional communication. 
  2. Apply the principles of effective written communication to a variety of workplace documents, such as emails, reports, and proposals. 
  3. Use effective verbal communication techniques to deliver clear and concise oral presentations.  
  4. Use technology effectively to communicate in the workplace. 
  5. Explain the ethical dimensions of professional communication. 
  6. Define interpersonal communication strategies for effective communication. 

Course Schedule and Topics

This course will cover the following topics in eight learning sessions, with one Unit per week. The Final Exam will take place during Week/Unit 9 (UoPeople time).

Week 3: Unit 3 – Written Communication in the Workplace 1

Week 4: Unit 4 – Written Communication in the Workplace 2

Week 5: Unit 5 – Verbal Communication Techniques 1

Week 6: Unit 6 – Verbal Communication Techniques 2

Week 7: Unit 7 – Technology and Ethical Dimensions of Communication

Week 8: Unit 8 – Interpersonal Communication Week 9: Unit 9 – Course Review and Final Exam
