The M.Ed. Program Helped Me Take My Teaching to the Next Level
Updated: June 16, 2025

I’m originally from Jamaica, but I now consider North Carolina, United States, to be my home. My personal and professional journeys have been centered around purpose and determination. Growing up in Lucea, Hanover, Jamaica, instilled in me the importance of curiosity, perseverance, and hard work. It showed me that to truly make an impact, I must work hard and remain authentic.
As a mother of three, a devoted partner, and a full-time educator, I believe my life exemplifies the impact of purpose-driven education.
Why I Teach
My educational background is pretty diverse. I started with an Associate degree in General Agriculture from the College of Agriculture Science and Education in Jamaica, then got a Diploma in Secondary Education from Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies from the University of the West Indies and Montego Bay Community College.
I teach science to middle schoolers, and I love sparking their interest in biology and environmental science. My journey to this fulfilling career has been filled with intention and commitment to continuous growth. I truly believe that education was my ladder to success, and now I want to help lift others.
Immigrating to the United States
Armed with a deep commitment to education and a passion for truth, I immigrated to the United States in 2021 to pursue greater professional and personal opportunities. I was seeking a path that would allow me to grow academically, support my family, and expand my impact as an educator. With years of teaching experience in Jamaica and a strong academic foundation, I adapted quickly to the American education system. My decision to teach in the US was driven by a desire to challenge myself, embrace new pedagogical approaches, and serve diverse student populations with compassion and excellence. Teaching in American classrooms has surely deepened my understanding of global education and reaffirmed my belief in the transformative power of learning.
The M.Ed. Program Jumpstarted My Teaching Career
A major turning point in my career came when a close friend recommended UoPeople to me. By this point, I had already been considering broadening my teaching experience and moving to the States. When I researched the M.Ed. program being offered by UoPeople, I was excited to find that the courses could prepare me for the American teaching environment. I enrolled immediately. UoPeople gave me the right framework for improving my teaching methods, a flexible learning environment, and a global perspective. The program helped me take my teaching to the next level.
The curriculum at UoPeople broadened my understanding and helped me create learning spaces that are student-centered and inclusive. I especially appreciated the program’s focus on practical teaching experiences, culturally sensitive instruction, and educational equity.
Juggling Work, Studies, and Family
Balancing a full-time job and raising a family while earning my M.Ed. was a challenge, but I made it through thanks to the incredible support and resources at UoPeople. Compartmentalizing, prioritizing, and setting boundaries also helped me a great deal. I based my daily schedule on strict to-do lists, got enough rest, and tried my best to eat healthy and stay fit. I believe it takes a healthy body and mind to excel academically. I also made it a point to take time out to unwind and appreciate nature. It was all these small everyday things that helped the big things fall into place.
My Two Cents for Prospective UoPeople Learners
Reflecting on my experience, I can confidently say that my time at UoPeople was not merely about obtaining a degree; it served as a genuine trigger for my development. It allowed me to thoroughly assess my teaching strategies, enhance my ability to assist my varied student groups, and cultivate my leadership abilities, both within the classroom and beyond.
I now aim to inspire future educators to begin their journeys, no matter where they start. To anyone looking to join here, I would say: “If UoPeople is on your mind, then act immediately because this university serves as more than just an online institution. It is indeed a global network of people dedicated to making positive changes in education. If you commit to the required effort, your life will be transformed.”
Never Ceasing to Work and Inspire
I am now pursuing a PhD in Education at the University of Zambia. My career objectives involve mentoring new teachers while creating curricula that uphold scholarly standards and cultural significance. My lifelong teaching commitment is to support underprivileged students in achieving their full potential.
