Health Science Student, Isaac Wanyonyi Says UoPeople Has Made the World a Small Village
Isaac Wanyonyi S., Kenya, Health Science
Isaac Wanyonyi S. hails from Kakamega County, Kenya. He comes from a humble family of small-scale farmers who sometimes had to lease their land, making it difficult to provide for their large family. His parents often struggled to meet basic needs, surviving on just one meal a day. His late mother worked tirelessly to support them, and their situation made him appreciate the value of education even more.
He is currently in his final term at University of the People, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science. Isaac’s educational journey began in his rural hometown at Kongoni Primary School, where he overcame numerous challenges to excel in his studies. He graduated from high school in 2011 with good grades. However, despite his academic success, he couldn’t immediately enroll in college because of financial constraints.
“I was eventually able to join Mt Kenya University for a diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology. I found out about UoPeople through social media. Once I understood how learning at UoPeople worked, I didn’t even think twice. I was desperate to earn a college degree, and affordability meant everything to me. This felt like a dream come true. So far, I have been able to manage my studies alongside my family and work responsibilities. Now I am only a month away from completing my degree. I am thankful to UoPeople for the opportunity and to my family who have understood the need to juggle my career and studies simultaneously. Their support through my college journey has kept me going,” he shares.
What Isaac appreciates most about UoPeople is the global community it has fostered. “I love networking with other peers from around the world. The class discussions and assignments are well designed. I have grown so much by learning about my peers’ cultural backgrounds and experiences. UoPeople makes the world a small village, I believe. We also have great study resources, such as our virtual library. I find everything I need to research for my assignments. The instructors are always willing to help. I must say that I enjoy studying here more than I ever did in a traditional university. I have learned the importance of staying self-motivated after enrolling here. I have also improved tremendously in areas like critical thinking, efficient time management, and communication. Given a chance, I would choose UoPeople again and again.”
When not studying or working, Isaac loves to travel and interact with people from all walks of life. Upon his graduation, he is hopeful of finding the right career opportunities and intends to give back to his community. He also plans to earn a master’s degree in health science as he is deeply passionate about the field. Isaac’s future looks bright, and we wish him all the best for all the dreams he has to fulfil.
