Breaking Barriers and Building Opportunity: My Journey with UoPeople
Updated: March 11, 2026
I began my academic journey at University of the People in 2021 while working full-time. As a first-generation college graduate from Nigeria, earning my degree represents more than a personal milestone; it represents the hopes and dreams of my family.
Growing up in a modest household, I witnessed my parents’ sacrifices to provide us with the basics. Access to quality education was not always guaranteed. Those early experiences shaped my resilience and gave me a deep appreciation for education as a pathway to opportunity.
Why I Chose UoPeople
I chose UoPeople because it offered something rare: access to a high-quality, tuition-free education that was flexible and globally recognized. As someone working full-time, traditional universities were not financially or logistically possible for me.
UoPeople allowed me to earn a degree in Business Administration while balancing work and life. It made what once felt out of reach attainable.
The Global Classroom Experience
One of my favorite aspects of studying at UoPeople was the global classroom experience. Engaging with peers from diverse countries and backgrounds broadened my understanding of business and human behavior.
The peer-learning model strengthened my critical thinking skills and helped me grow beyond academics. I developed resilience, global awareness, and the confidence to collaborate across cultures — skills that are essential in today’s interconnected world.
Balancing Work and Education
Balancing work and studies was never easy. There were many days when I came home drained from a full day’s work, only to dive straight into assignments and exams. I experienced emotional burnout, financial strain, and moments of self-doubt.
Yet those challenges strengthened me. They built my discipline, expanded my perspective, and taught me the true meaning of perseverance. UoPeople didn’t just educate me academically — it refined my character and strengthened my endurance.
Life After Graduation
Today, I hold a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration along with a certification in Data Analytics. My education has already begun to open doors and boost my confidence as a professional. It has equipped me with essential knowledge in business strategy, problem-solving, and leadership.
Since graduating, I have applied these skills in practical and entrepreneurial ways. In 2025, I co-founded a startup focused on building solutions for a global audience. That same year, my team and I won a hackathon competition — a milestone that validated both our innovation and resilience.
These experiences reaffirmed that my education was not just theoretical. It prepared me to build, lead, and think strategically.
As a first-generation college graduate, this achievement breaks barriers not only for me, but for my family as well.
Paying It Forward
Education transformed my life, and I am committed to helping others access similar opportunities.
I have introduced University of the People to several undergraduate students who are now enrolled and pursuing their degrees. I also participated in an outreach initiative where I shared my story with senior secondary school students, encouraging them to consider accessible global education.
Looking Ahead
I aspire to build a career where data meets impact, helping organizations make smarter decisions while promoting social responsibility.
I plan to pursue an MBA and step into leadership roles within a global company, while mentoring others who are walking similar paths.
I am proud of how far I’ve come, but I know this is only the beginning.
University of the People didn’t just give me a degree — it gave me access, confidence, and the foundation to build and create lasting impact.
