Overview

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program aims to help students improve their English language abilities and equip them to be successful in their studies and careers. This non-degree, non-credit bearing program is made up of eight levels of proficiency and students will be placed at the best level for them based on their personal experience. After reaching the highest-level students will take the Oxford Test of English to prove their competency in English.  Similar to our other programs, students will be asked to pay an assessment fee of $130 at the end of each course, however, the University may provide scholarships to students who are unable to pay this fee.

Admission Requirements

Anyone who has graduated high school, is 16 years of age or older, and can provide a valid English test score taken from one of the following below can study online at UoPeople.

  • Accuplacer 
  • CEFR 
  • Duolingo 
  • EIKEN 
  • IELTS 
  • PTE 
  • TOEFL IBT 
  • TOEFL PBT 

Those unable to provide a valid English test score have the option of taking a Duolingo placement test as part of the application process, or can begin the ESL program at Level 3.

Curriculum / Courses

The objective of the English as a Second Language program is to improve the level of an English learner. The ESL classes teach different English language skills, according to the English ability of the students, interest, and needs. Students are assigned a level that corresponds to their individual needs. All programs teach the following: grammar, reading, comprehension, writing, and vocabulary.

Paying for school

UoPeople does not charge for tuition, books, or campus expenses. We charge only a $100 application fee for the ESL program, and a $130 assessment fee at the end of each course. By submitting your English test scores you may be placed in a higher level, resulting in fewer courses to complete the program and saving you money!

University of the People is accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission. The Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a recognized accrediting agency. 

Absolutely! Classes at UoPeople are small and highly qualified instructors are available to answer students’ questions and offer support. Additionally, each student is connected with a personal Program Advisor at the commencement of their studies, who remains with them until graduation. Program Advisors act as the students’ personal support system throughout their studies. The Program Advisor will answer any questions the student may have, offer academic advice, discuss course selection, and offer encouragement throughout the student’s studies.

Asynchronous learning allows you to learn on your own schedule. You will have access via the UoPeople Online Campus to assignments, lectures, and other learning materials. There are no live lectures or set class times at UoPeople.
