Dear {{contact.firstname}},

World Refugee Day on June 20 is an annual reminder of the plight of the more than 32.5 million people around the globe forcibly displaced from their homes due to conflict, persecution or natural disasters. While refugees face numerous challenges, access to higher education remains one of the most crucial yet elusive opportunities for them. Only 6% of refugees have access to higher education, according to the UN Refugee Agency.

Innocent Tshilombo, Graduate,

Business Administration, Kenya

That’s why, Innocent Tshilombo, a UoPeople student who fled the Democratic Republic of Congo to Kenya after several of his family members were killed, decided to do something about it. He built a solar-powered internet kiosk so that he and the other refugees in his camp could connect to the outside world. The device enabled Innocent to apply for a scholarship to UoPeople and earn a bachelor’s degree. For his innovative work, Innocent won the 2022 Ashden Award, a prestigious international prize for sustainable energy projects. Recently he began working on his MBA with us. Online education has emerged as a lifeline for refugees such as Innocent, providing them with flexible, accessible and cost-effective learning opportunities. UoPeople is leading the global effort to provide these online opportunities and currently enrolls over 16,500 refugees – more than any other university in the world. Please support our efforts to help additional refugees by donating to our scholarship fund today.

Below you can read some of UoPeople’s recent media coverage including a Yahoo Finance story about UoPeople’s new partnership with Sophia Learning and a story in an African publication about how the university has become a “game-changer” in online education.
