About Godfrey Okoye University
Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI) is a private Catholic university in Enugu, Nigeria, established by the Catholic Diocese of Enugu and granted provisional approval by the National Universities Commission on 3 November 2009. It holds the distinction of being the first university in Africa owned by a Catholic diocese. The idea was first conceived by Emeritus Bishop A.O. Gbuji under the working name „Cor Unum“ („One Heart“), and the eventual institution was named after Bishop Godfrey Okoye, the second Bishop of Enugu, who donated 95 percent of the land used for the university’s permanent site at Thinkers Corner. GOUNI offers programs through faculties including Arts, Education, Law, Natural and Applied Sciences, Management and Social Science, and Engineering, plus a College of Medicine affiliated with the GOUNI Teaching Hospital, with a student population of over 7,000.
GOUNI maintains international partnerships with the University of Nigeria, Birmingham City University, and Bowie State University, and works with organizations including Globeethics.net, BASF, and UNESCO. The university has awarded over 300 scholarships since its founding.
