Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University
About Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) is a federal university of technology in Bauchi, north-eastern Nigeria, named after Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nigeria’s first and only Prime Minister. It was established in 1980 as the Federal University of Technology, Bauchi, admitting its first pre-degree and remedial students in October 1981. In 1984 it was merged with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, becoming Abubakar Tafawa Balewa College; it regained full autonomy in 1988 under its present name. ATBU operates across the Yelwa and Gubi campuses and comprises 7 faculties plus a College of Medical Sciences, with roughly 10,000 undergraduates.
The university’s motto is „Doctrina Mater Artium“ („Education is the mother of the practical arts“), reflecting its applied, technology-focused curriculum, developed in 1980 in consultation with experts from Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Notable alumni include Dikko Umaru Radda, Executive Governor of Katsina State, and Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, former Federal Minister of Communications and Digital Economy.
