Imo State University
About Imo State University
Imo State University (IMSU) is a state-owned university in Owerri, Imo State, south-eastern Nigeria, established on 23 February 1981 through Law No. 4 of the Imo State House of Assembly under Governor Chief Sam Mbakwe, admitting its first 392 students that October. The university originally operated from a campus in Uturu; following the creation of Abia State in 1991, that campus and its facilities were ceded to the new state, becoming what is now Abia State University. In April 1992, under Governor Evans Enwerem, IMSU was re-established in Owerri at the Lake Nwaebere Campus, previously used by the Federal University of Technology, Owerri before that institution relocated to its permanent site at Ihiagwa. IMSU offers programs across faculties including Medicine, Law, Engineering, Social Sciences, Management Sciences, Education, and the Humanities, with additional campuses in Orlu and Okigwe.
IMSU’s motto is „Excellence in Service.“ Its academic structure originally used a collegiate system, replaced by a conventional faculty structure at the start of the 2001/2002 session, with the College of Medicine and Health Sciences retaining its original status.
