Senior Adviser at Foreign Policy Group
Antoine van Agtmael is senior adviser at the FP Group that publishes Foreign Policy Magazine. He was the principal founder, CIO, and CEO of the investment management firm Emerging Markets Management LLC and also a founding director of the Strategic Investment Group SM. Previously, Antoine was deputy director at the International Finance Corporation (where he coined the term “emerging markets”), division chief at the World Bank, managing director of Thailand’s leading investment bank TISCO, and vice president at Bankers Trust.
Antoine is the co-author of The Smartest Places on Earth and author of The Emerging Markets Century and other books on emerging markets. He has taught and lectured widely. Antoine is a trustee of The Brookings Institution (and co-chair of its International Advisory Council) and the NPR Foundation (and its former chair). He is board chair of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art (Freer Sackler) and has been a director of Magnum Photos. He is also a member of the Yale President’s Council on International Activities and the advisory boards of the Yale Jackson Institute and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Antoine is a graduate of Erasmus University in Rotterdam, has an M.A. in Russian and East European studies from Yale University, and an MBA from New York University’s Stern School.
