Dr. Roger Mandle is a member of UoPeople’s President's Council. He is the Senior Advisor to the Chair of the Board of Trustees of Qatar Museums Authority. In this role he directs The Friends of Qatar Museums Authority, a foundation to promote and support QMA, and also manages the International Advisory Council of QMA. From 2008-2012, Dr. Mandle was Executive Director and Chief Officer Museums at Qatar Museums Authority.
A cum laude graduate of Williams College (1963), Dr. Mandle holds an MA and a Certificate in Museum Training from New York University (1967) and a Ph.D. in Art History from Case Western Reserve University (2002). His dissertation was on eighteenth century Dutch art academies.
Dr. Mandle was appointed President of Rhode Island School of Design in 1993, and served until Commencement in 2008. During this time, RISD grew in stature and assets. Mandle completed a $115 million capital campaign in 2007 that brought extensive improvements to academic facilities, technology, scholarships and other financial assets, and quality of life on campus. At that time, the endowment had grown to nearly $400 million. RISD ranked consistently at the top of the charts in almost all areas of academic concentration, and its alumni programs became the model of the field.
As an educator, art historian, and leader of major cultural institutions, Dr. Mandle has been a internationally known figure in the field of education in the arts and humanities for the past thirty-five years. After serving as the Associate Director of the Minneapolis Museum of Art, he was Associate Director and then Director of the Toledo Museum of Art (’74-’88). Dr. Mandle was appointed Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., serving from 1988 to 1993.
Dr. Mandle was chairman of the Rhode Island Independent Higher Education Association and a Board Member of the Providence Foundation. He has served as a member of several corporate boards, including the board of directors of Trustcorp, a bank in Toledo, Ohio (now merged with Key Bank, Cleveland) and Cranston Printworks, Cranston, R. I. He was a member of the committee that created the TED Prize, and helped to organize the first TEDxSummit in Doha, Qatar in 2012.
Mandle is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including seven Honorary Degrees: from University of Toledo, Kenyon College, Brown University, Maryland Institute College of Art, Bryant University, Rhode Island School of Design, and Virginia Commonwealth University. He was awarded Knight of the Order of Isabela la Catolica by His Highness King Juan Carlos of Spain.
Dr. Mandle is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He is a member of the Century Association in New York and the Bohemian Club in San Francisco. He resides in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts with his artist/designer wife of 47 years. He is a father of two children and five grandchildren.
